Remodeling? Electrical Safety Comes First!

Florida Electrical SafetyRemodeling can be a lot of fun, but it’s important not to overlook the functional aspects of your home’s electrical systems when planning your project. Electrical safety is important. Sometimes homeowners forget to allow for electrical upgrades when planning their remodeling budget.

Older homes can’t support today’s demand for power. We use way more electrical devices and appliances than we ever have before. The wiring and electrical panel need to be upgraded every ten years or sooner, but many are not upgraded in decades. If your home electrical system hasn’t been upgraded and you’re planning to remodel, get an electrical inspection first.

Gillis Electric, Inc. are Florida electricians who have some great advice about electrical safety. We hope this can help you plan out our remodeling budget with electrical safety in mind.

Electrical Inspections

Many people think about electrical inspections only when buying or selling a home. They don’t realize that an inspection should be done every decade or so. As we increase the power demands in our homes, the electrical system needs to be able to supply it. You may need new circuits installed, new breakers installed, wiring replaced, or bad repairs fixed properly.

An electrical inspection uncovers all the problems that need to be fixed. This is a priority over any other type of remodeling. Before you consider plugging more things into your electrical system, call a local electrician for an inspection. Watch out for these common problems as well:

  • Flickering lights
  • Frequent surges
  • Sparks
  • Burn spots around outlets
  • Exposed wiring
  • Burning smells
  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Outlets that seem blocked
  • Loose wiring

Whole-Home Surge Protection

Another important consideration if you’re planning to remodel is installing a whole-home surge protection system. Do you have several home computers and an entertainment system? If so, you probably have them plugged into a surge power strip or battery backup with surge protection. Unfortunately, power surges can occur through any type of wiring in your home including the cable TV, internet, and telephone wiring.

Unless every appliance in your home is plugged into a portable surge protector, you likely have thousands of dollars worth of equipment that is still vulnerable. Also, the wiring circuit which experiences a surge is vulnerable. That entire circuit of wiring can blow out, meaning you’ll need an electrician to replace the entire line of wiring from the outlets to the electrical panel.

A whole-home surge protection system protects every circuit in the home. This means that all the wiring and everything plugged into your home’s outlets is protected in the event of a surge.

It’s worth getting an estimate for whole-home surge protection from your local electricians. If you live in Hernando County, Citrus County, Sumter County, or Pasco County, call our Florida electricians at Gillis Electric, Inc. for an estimate.
